Travel CPAP advice: useful tips

Interested in a travel CPAP? We give you useful tips!

Vacations are something we all eagerly anticipate as they provide a chance to recharge our batteries in new and exciting surroundings. However, for CPAP users, ensuring a carefree trip and a pleasant stay requires proper preparation. Luckily, the advent of small travel CPAP devices has made the process much easier. In this blog post, we'll explore the convenience of these travel-friendly CPAP machines and highlight two popular options: the ResMed AirMini Auto CPAP and the BMC M1 Mini Auto CPAP.

Discover the convenience of a travel CPAP

Gone are the days of lugging around large and heavy CPAP machines from home. Thanks to compact and lightweight travel CPAP devices, you can now enjoy a hassle-free experience. Whether you're going camping, flying, or staying at a hotel, a travel CPAP is the perfect companion for your journey.

Our selection includes two exceptional travel apnea devices: the ResMed AirMini Auto CPAP and the BMC M1 Mini Auto CPAP. Both devices are small and lightweight, with the AirMini edging slightly lighter than the M1 Mini. Moreover, their flexibility in power compatibility (100-240 volts) makes them suitable for worldwide use. Operating these devices is simple, as they function similarly to the CPAP device you use at home. Choose from automatic or fixed pressure settings, along with a ramp option and pressure relief. While travel CPAPs may produce a tad more noise compared to home devices, most users find it easy to adapt. To track your therapy results, simply download the free app on your smartphone and connect via Bluetooth. The AirMini app is aptly named "AirMini™️ by ResMed", while the M1 Mini app is called "LightTrip".

Suitable CPAP masks for the ResMed AirMini

When opting for a CPAP device, it's important to note that masks are not included and need to be purchased separately. Specifically, with the ResMed AirMini Auto CPAP, selecting the appropriate mask and tubing is crucial. Depending on the model, some CPAP kits may include a complete set with the mask and AirMini parts, while others require separate products for the mask and AirMini setup pack. Below, we've compiled the available options based on mask types:

Nasal masks

- AirFit N20 Nasal Mask + AirMini N20 Setup Pack

The AirFit N20 mask has a silicone nasal cushion that is placed over the nose.

- AirTouch N20 Nasal Mask + AirMini N20 Setup Pack

The AirTouch N20 mask has a memory foam nasal cushion that is placed over the nose.

- AirMini N30 Mask Pack

The AirFit N30 mask in this kit has a silicone nasal cushion that is placed under the nose.

Nasal pillows masks

- AirMini P10 Mask Pack

The AirFit P10 mask in this kit has a silicone nasal pillows cushion.

Full face masks

- AirFit F20 Full Face Mask + AirMini F20/F30 Setup Pack + AirMini HumidX F20

The AirFit F20 mask has a silicone full face cushion that is placed over the nose and mouth.

- AirTouch F20 Full Face Mask + AirMini F20/F30 Setup Pack + AirMini HumidX F20

The AirTouch F20 mask has a memory foam full face cushion that is placed over the nose and mouth.

- AirFit F30 Full Face Mask + AirMini F20/F30 Setup Pack

The AirFit F30 mask has a silicone full face cushion that is placed under the nose and over the mouth.

Suitable CPAP masks for the BMC M1 Mini

The M1 Mini also does not come with a mask by default. The big advantage of this device is that you can basically use any CPAP mask with a standard connection, except the ResMed AirMini masks (which can only be used with the AirMini). Will you be using the M1 Mini? Then a BMC mask with waterless humidification is recommended. The N5AH nasal mask has a silicone nasal cushion that is placed over the nose, and the P2H Nasal Pillows mask has a silicone nasal pillows cushion.

Waterless humidification with the ResMed AirMini

The ResMed AirMini revolutionizes travel CPAP with its unique waterless humidification system called HumidX. This innovative solution enables you to enjoy humidification benefits while on the go, without the need for a separate humidification chamber and water. HumidX operates as a condenser humidifier, discreetly placed between the connecting hose of the mask and the CPAP hose. By capturing heat and moisture as you exhale, HumidX ensures you breathe in warm and humidified air. For those venturing to high altitudes or dry environments, HumidX Plus offers optimal performance. However, please note that HumidX F20 is exclusively compatible with the AirFit F20 and AirTouch F20 mask models.

Waterless humidification with the BMC M1 Mini

Like the ResMed AirMini masks, the BMC N5AH and P2H masks work with waterless humidification. The condenser humidifier captures heat and moisture from your breathing, so you can breathe in warm, humidified air. BMC condenser humidifiers also have a filter, so you won't get dust inside. HU is the standard version, HU-Plus is recommended especially at high altitudes and in dry environments.

Accessories and replacement parts

Both the AirMini and the M1 Mini offer a range of accessories to complement your travel experience. For the AirMini, you can opt for a travel bag, hard case, or a convenient mounting system to secure your device on a bed or bedside table. If you're traveling in a motorhome or caravan, the AirMini DC/DC converter will prove invaluable. Similarly, the M1 Mini offers a separate travel bag for safe transportation of the CPAP and its accessories, particularly when flying.

Additionally, it's crucial to keep essential replacement parts in mind. Filters, condenser humidifiers, and spare cushions for the mask should be packed for your journey, as finding these components at your vacation destination might be challenging. Don't forget to carry an ample supply of CPAP mask wipes to maintain hygiene during your travels. And, of course, make sure to bring along the user manual for your device and mask.

Using the CPAP with a battery

When electricity is not readily available during your travels or at your destination, a CPAP battery becomes a valuable asset. With a CPAP battery, you can sleep comfortably with your device anywhere, even without AC power. Whether you're camping, on a plane trip, or visiting a country with frequent power outages, a CPAP battery ensures continuous therapy. Both the ResMed AirMini and the BMC M1 Mini are compatible with the Medistrom Pilot-24 Lite battery. For the AirMini and M1 Mini, consider investing in a separate Medistrom Pilot-24 Lite AC power supply. For the M1 Mini, you’ll need a Medistrom BMC M1 Mini kit as well.

Tips to prepare your trip properly

We would like to give you some general tips on how to best prepare for your trip:

Are you going to fly? If so, contact the airline well in advance to avoid surprises at the airport. Ask about the conditions for bringing and using your CPAP device (and battery) on board.

If you want to use your device on board, reserve a spot near a power point. By the way, it is strongly recommended to use the CPAP on board with a battery.

Also, when traveling by train, bus, or boat, contact the carrier in advance.

Bring an extension cord and possibly a travel plug/travel adapter to your vacation destination.

Before leaving, check that you have packed your mask, tubing, and AC adapter.
