CPAP therapy in short

People with sleep apnea suffer from frequent breathing stops during the night. These breathing stops have a major impact on your night's rest, making you feel very tired during the day. The disorder can have major physical and mental consequences if left untreated. It is often diagnosed after sleep study. A commonly chosen treatment for sleep apnea is CPAP therapy with a CPAP machine. You can use this machine on fixed pressure or on automatic pressure. During your CPAP therapy, air flows into your airways through the CPAP hose and the CPAP mask. This prevents the breathing stops. As a result, you will sleep better and you will be fitter during the day.

What is a CPAP machine?

CPAP is an abbreviation for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. In principle, CPAP machines are set to a fixed (therapy) pressure. There are also devices that work on an automatic pressure: APAP (Auto CPAP) devices. APAP stands for Automatic Positive Airway Pressure.

The machine's (optional) ramp function makes your therapy more comfortable. The pressure will slowly build up to the desired pressure, allowing you to get used to the therapy. You can also opt for pressure relief on exhalation, for even more comfort. Manufacturers of sleep apnea equipment use different terminology for this pressure relief function (Reslex, softPAP, EPR, EZEX, etc.).
